Sentence


Definition

A group of words which makes complete sense is called Sentence.
OR
A group of words which gives complete meaning is called Sentence.

For example:
  • I am a boy
  • You are a girl
  • They are students
  • James is an honest man
  • Rock is very hot
  • 1 I am going to school.
  • A friend in need is a friend indeed.
  • They play base ball.
  • What is your name?.
  • With what do you see?.
  • Where are you now?.
  • what is your favorite color?.
  • Do not go there.
  • Do not waste your time.
  • I like green color.
  • Sun rises in the east.
  • She is a girl.
  • He is a boy.
  • The stars are shining in the sky.

Kinds of Sentences

There are five Kinds of Sentences.

 

1.Statement or Assertion Sentence.

Definition

A sentence that makes statement,assertion or declare something is called Statement , Assertive or Declarative Sentence.

For example
  • I am a boy
  • She is a girl.
  • He is a tall man.
  • New York is a big city.
  • Julia is going to University.
  • Rose is a very beautiful.
  • He is an intelligent student.
  • This is a pen.
  • It is a big cow.

 

2.Imperative Sentence.

Definition

An Imperative sentence is one which express order,request advice, prohibition or proposal is called An Imperative Sentence.
For example
  • Open the door.
  • Go away.
  • Please help me.
  • Do not waste your time.
  • Speak the truth.
  • Let us go home.
  • Come here.
  • Do not tell a lie.
  • Shut the window

 

3.Interrogative Sentence.

Definition

An Interrogative Sentence is one which is used to ask questions.
For example
  • Has he come?
  • Are you happy?
  • Do you write a letter?
  • How old are you?
  • Where do you live?
  • When do you come to school?
  • Who teaches you Sindhi?

 

4.Exclamatory Sentence.

Definition

An exclamatory sentence is one which expresses exclamation, grief, joy or curse is called an Exclamatory Sentence.
For example
  • How very hot the day is!
  • How long the tree is!
  • What a clever boy you are!
  • What a happy news it is!
  • May you live long!
  • Alas! they have left us for ever.
  • Hurrah! We have won the match.

Remember:

1. Exclamatory Sentence starts with How or What their verb is placed at the end of sentence. as in examples 1,2,3,4.
2. Exclamatory Sentence start with May its verb is placed at the beginning of sentence, as in example 5.
3. Exclamatory Sentence starts with Interjection its verb is placed in the middle of the sentence, as in examples 6 and 7.

 

5.Optative Sentence.

Definition

An Optative Sentence is one which expresses some feelings especially wish or desire, is called an Optative Sentence.

For example
  • May you live long!
  • May he succeed in his aim!
  • Would that I were rich!
  • Would that my friend were sincere!
  • Would that I were a king!
  • Would that he had spoken the truth!
  • Would that I had been a child!
