A word placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relation to an other word is called Preposition.Or
A Preposition is a word or group of words placed before a noun or pronoun to show in what relation a person or thing stands to some thing else, is called Preposition.
For example,
1. My book is on the table.
2. The teacher is in the class.
3. He fought with me.
4. The young man jumped into the river.
5. Boys are returning from school.
In above sentences italic words are prepostions. which show their relation with nouns and pronouns.
