Adjective


Definition:
An Adjective is a word used with a noun or pronoun to add some thing to its meaning.
 OR
Adjective means added to.
OR
An Adjective is a describing or a qualifying word.
For example,
1. James is a tall man
2. James is a thin man
3. James is a good man
4. James is a young man
5. James is a old man
6. James is a brave man
7. James is a great man
In above examples tall, thin, good, young, old, brave, great are Adjectives, because they qualify or add something to the meaning of noun James.

1. An Adjective usually answers one of these questions, as;

1. What kind of?

2. Which?

3. How many?

4. How much?

Let us look at the following sentences.

1. Maria is a clever girl.

(What kind of--------Clever).

2. I don"'"t like silver plates.

(Which---------Silver).

3. He bought four apples.

(How many-------------four).

4. There is little milk in jug.

(How much-------little).

2.In English, the Adjective is used in one form and has no concern with the Number and Gender, as;

Good boy. Good boys.

Good girl. Good girls.

(1). A single Adjective is usually placed immediately before the noun to which it describes, as;

1. William is a clever man.

2. Simon is a lazy boy.

(2). When several adjectives are used with a noun, they will come after it, as;

i. It is night long, dark, horrible and restless.

ii. You are man simple, innocent, inexperienced and you are trapped by people selfish, cruel, and cunning.

(3). Latinized Adjectives as Worthseeing and concerned are used after the noun; as,

i. It is a sight worth seeing.

i. The case has been sent to the office concerned.

(4). Some times Adjectives come after the verbs.

i. He is foolish

ii. They are selfish.

iii. Michael is sincere.

(5). Some times ing is added to a verb to make an adjective which is used before a noun; as,

Bark------------Barking.

Bloom-----------Blooming.

Refresh---------Refreshing.

Swim------------Swimming.

i. The barking dogs seldom bite.

ii. She is a blooming girl.

iii. The juice has a refreshing effect.

(6). When a noun comes after an adjective, an article is used before the same adjective in a singular case.

i. He is an honest man.

ii. Hudson is an intelligent boy.
